I belong to a community of service. Throughout my childhood, my family and I spent our weekends volunteering or finding someone in need. We rebuilt homes during Hurricane Harvey in our hometown or gathered and donated clothes to families in need in Mexico. My mom, especially, is always lending a hand to others and inspires me to cultivate a giving and caring heart, that I hope to carry forward in all aspects of my life.
For example, throughout high school, my summers have consisted of volunteering at Camp Blessing, a special needs camp. My most recent camper, Ally, was non-verbal and was dependent on many tasks. That week was one of the most demanding but most rewarding in my life. I slept around 2 hours a night but seeing Ally’s smile as we drew in her notebook or rode horses are memories I will never forget. I learned about her fascination with Trolls, her addiction to Ketchup, and her most amazing talent: the Macarena dance. Although she couldn’t speak, she taught me that the most profound forms of communication transcend words, and rather are shared moments of joy.
As I aspire to pursue a business degree in the future, I recognize the synergy between my passion for service and my career goals. The teamwork and leadership skills cultivated through service align seamlessly with the collaborative nature of the business world. With that I hope to be able to make a bigger difference in the world with a business degree by my side.

What drew you to the Forty Acres Scholars Program?
I was drawn to the Forty Acres Program especially by the enrichment it provides. The program's emphasis on discovery aligned with my interest of wanting to explore different cultures and live in another country at some point in my college journey. The opportunity to either do community service, go to conferences, or explore the world, is what makes this program unique and that’s just one of the many aspects that I love and this program provides.
