About the Program
Longhorn Advocates is a mentorship and engagement program through Student Government in partnership with Texas Exes. The program aims to champion the University of Texas at Austin and higher education as a whole. Alumni will be paired with a student from their respective state senate district who was chosen through an extensive interview process. Participants will take part in a series of events aimed at building strong and lasting relationships, while empowering the student-alumni pairs to tackle policies that will shape higher education. It’s an opportunity for alumni to encourage students and get involved in advocacy and for students to form important relationships with alumni and legislators from around the state.
How It Works
During the legislative interim, alumni will attend an issue information and program training session. This year, alumni-student pairs will also receive complimentary registration to the 2015 Texas Tribune Festival in order to follow the higher education track and learn more about the issues likely to come up next session. During the Interim, the pairs will meet with their senator at least twice and attend receptions, talks, and other small gatherings.
Get Involved
The application is now open to all alumni. We need one alumnus participant from each of the 31 state senate districts. If you are interested in participating in the program or have any questions, please contact utadvocates@texasexes.org.
