If I told you to jump off of a plank thirty feet in the air, would you do it?   

The lanky man climbing the ladder to my platform isn’t so sure. He’s almost two feet taller than me and his knees are quivering. I quickly assess the situation and figure out how to coax him out of his shell while delivering instructions in an inviting and concise manner.  

During my time at Aerial Trapeze Academy, my job involved holding flyers’ harnesses while instilling enough confidence in them to leap from my thirty-foot-high platform. Though not in the description, a principal part of this job is inspiring people. In under five minutes, I convince people to trust themselves and to trust me to keep them safe. I am pushed to find the perfect balance between being authoritative and empathetic. Through founding a nonprofit, leading Florida DECA as the state Vice President, instructing a course for Wave Learning Festival, and being declared the “unofficial manager” of my rowing team, I’ve had the privilege of transferring the leadership skills I’ve picked up at Aerial Trapeze Academy to a multitude of different avenues, which makes me excited to learn new ways to apply my skills and continue to grow as a leader and businessperson in the Business Honors program.

What drew you to the Forty Acres Scholars Program (FASP)? 
The day after Halloween in 2005, I walked around my small neighborhood in Florida, knocking on doors, looking for round two of trick-or-treating. As a child, I grew up in a loving and supportive community where all members helped each other through everything from hurricanes to everyday living. As I look back, I realize the moment my three-year-old arms held a pillowcase full of candy that afternoon on November 1 was the start of my membership in a community. Today, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a community of brilliant and goofy students who support each other and look forward to growing together. After a disappointing cancellation of Camp Texas due to Covid, the 2025 Forty Acres Scholar cohort banded together and refused to give up our bonding opportunity. For three days, we lived together in an AirBnB on the outskirts of Austin, where we cooked, dove off of cliffs, played sand volleyball, and went country dancing. In that short period of time, we connected, laughed, and began our own community. Each person pushes the others to reach their full potential, much like a team. So why Forty Acres? …Because I’m humbled and honored to have been chosen to both further empower this talented community and be impacted by the experiences we share.
